"MV/Aurora," by Bob Thompson, is a colored-pencil drawing based on a photo taken by the artist from the bow of the Alaska Marine Highway vessel MV/Aurora, as his family was departing Whittier, Alaska, through Port Valdez. The port is a pristine 13-mile-long fjord that empties into Valdez Arm, and then into the waters of Prince William Sound. The Alaska Marine Highway system is one of the most essential forms of transportation in Southeast Alaska, as that region, like most in the state, has a very limited road system, due to its extreme physical geography. The day of their passage was a whisper-calm day, with low clouds and a warm drizzle falling that muted nearly all sounds, except for the occasional cry of a seagull, or a passing fishing boat.
